Beverly Hills, CA, November 5, 2008- “President-Elect Barack Obama’s authoritative win in yesterday’s historic election proves, if nothing else, that optimism in the United States is not dead. It was only tamped underfoot, squeezed hard beneath the weight of eight years of divisive national crisis and the steady erosion of the guarantees that made this imperfect Union an exemplar for the world.

“His work begins now in earnest. And what work it is! The restoration of our national luster will take more than hope, more than a contagious zeal for change. Real transformation requires achieving the nearly impossible: snapping the bonds of hate and the polarization it fosters.

“This overwhelming victory for the Democratic Party represents an utter rejection of the toxic and failed policies of the Bush Administration, leaving us with a glimmer of hope for the restoration and preservation of our most precious rights.

“The American people demanded this change. And we will all be watching closely as the President-Elect takes these first steps into what could be the sunlight of a new American dawn.”

When you think of the things we love about our country, chances are you’re thinking of laws and programs created by Democratic administrations.

It was Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, who ushered in the 19th Amendment, which established a woman’s right to vote—no small matter. Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced unemployment compensation, welfare and Social Security to protect workers, children, the handicapped and the elderly. Lyndon B. Johnson, also a Democrat, gave us improved product labeling, the Freedom of Information Act and— most importantly—the Civil Rights Act.

Social programs and protections for the working class have been spotty on the Republican side of the ledger and virtually nonexistent since Ronald Reagan. In fact, starting with Reagan, past gains have consistently been pushed back or eliminated altogether. So when you ask yourself what’s at stake this election cycle, the answer is simple: everything!

It’s no accident that America is going broke, nor should it be a surprise. George W. Bush announced from the start that he didn’t believe in big government. One sure way to downsize a government is to defund it. Hence, ridiculous no-bid contracts to Halliburton, lack of oversight for the trillions of dollars spent on the Iraq War, tax cuts for the rich and so on. Our government and our country are being hollowed out.

Of course, the rich are doing okay. Only the poor and middle class are suffering. That’s a situation that can only worsen. And again, this is quite intentional. The people who really run America do not want a strong and vibrant middle class. Well-fed and secure citizens tend to cause problems by demanding that government live up to the articles of the Constitution. That just mucks things up for the big guys.

Americans have to decide what they want the future to hold for them and their children. Will you allow yourselves to be herded like cattle? Or will you stand up for your rights? The time to decide is now.

The economy is in the toilet. Band-aid action by the Federal Reserve will only push back the day of reckoning, not prevent it. Insurgent activity in Afghanistan grows stronger, our former friends in Europe and elsewhere boil with resentment, the Bush Justice Department refuses to pursue the criminal activity of our corrupt government officials, and the Senate is seeking retroactive immunity for illegal spying conducted by telecommunications companies.

How ironic that even as this illegitimate President was delivering his final State of the Union address (itself a series of lies), this lame duck made clear his intention to continue violating the law. With four separate signing statements on that same day, Bush reserved the right to: (1) not probe contracting fraud (as in Iraq); (2) not protect whistleblowers; (3) not provide Congress with intelligence documents; and, finally, (4) he reserved the right to build permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. So how have Democrats on Capitol Hill responded? With silence!  Many of you, no doubt, feel helpless in the face of this. But you must not lose faith. Continue to write your representatives and senators. Your letters and e-mails are much more effective than you think. In fact, they are the only thing in Washington that your legislators
will respond to, especially if they think their constituents are ready to throw them out of office.

What on earth is wrong with you?! Don’t you understand what is going on? Your government has betrayed you! It serves the interests of the rich and powerful, not the poor or working class. You
are being lied to and cheated. Each year your situation becomes more desperate. You’re just one catastrophic illness away from losing everything. Yet all you do is sit on your fat ass.

Where the fuck is your anger?! Why aren’t you out in the streets protesting? Why do you
sit at home watching mindless reality shows
as your jobs are being exported to China and India? When was the last time you called
or wrote your congressperson or senator?

Have you ever done that? Will you ever?

It’s time to take action! If you can’t rouse yourself now, you might not be allowed
to later.

It’s time to push aside the lies and illusions. We are a nation engulfed in civil war. We have failed to recognize it because the battlefield isn’t clearly marked and because the enemy has hidden in the shadows. We have been deceived by the flickering lies of the TV screen.

This war that tears at our country is not pitting brother against brother, or state against state, or even Christian against nonbeliever. It has been launched by the ruling elite against America’s citizens. It
is class warfare, and it is destroying our Constitution and—as a result—our very freedoms.

Give it a name if you must: It is fascism, the corporate control of our political system.

The time has come to fight back! Indeed, it is well past time! Do not acknowledge
the legitimacy of this government! The President, the Congress and the courts have failed us.

We damn both the Republicans and the Democrats. We demand that they stand trial for treason. Impossible? Remember: There are more of us than there are of them—
and that scares the piss out of them.

Impeach The Bastard

Monday, June 18th, 2007

George W. Bush is a traitor. He has betrayed the country by hurling us into a bloody, open-ended war that benefits only the war profiteers (of which it can be argued he
is one) and by shredding the Constitution he swore to uphold. Bush has not only suspended habeas corpus and posse comitatus, but also authorized torturing suspected foreign adversaries and eavesdropping on innocent American citizens.

Compare the foregoing (which is certainly not a complete list of Bush’s transgressions) to the articles of impeachment prepared against President Bill Clinton in 1999. Does anyone think, even for a moment, that what Clinton did comes close to the heinous crimes of George W. Bush? Does a blowjob have the same value as 3,000 American lives or the lives of 650,000 Iraqi civilians?

I urge the 110th Congress to support articles of impeachment against this usurper king. A failure to support them will send a message that justice is no longer served in our once-great country, leaving an indelible stain on the legislative branch.
It is less important that we get an impeachment vote in a divided Congress than it is that we make the attempt. Show us, your constituents, that you have the guts to do what’s right.
